Chinese New Year
The Lunar New Year is the most important festival in China, and it is also important in other Chinese-speaking communities all over the world. Every year the date is different. The festival is very old and nobody really knows its origins.
People decorate the doors and windows of their homes. On New Year's Eve they leave all the lights on in the house to keep the monster Nian away. Some people stay up all night to say goodbye to the old year and to welcome the New Year.
It is traditional to spend New Year's Eve with the family. People eat a big celebration dinner with fish, chicken, dumplings and sweet rice. After dinner, they put on new clothes and go out to see a midnight firework show and have fun at a traditional New Year fair. During the day, families visit their neighbours to wish them good luck and exchange gifts. The celebrations end with the traditional Lantern festival.
