Everest anniversary
Each year on 29th May people in Nepal celebrate the anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest. Mount Everest is in the Himalayas and it is the world's highest mountain. It is 8,848 metres high.
Every year hundreds of people try to climb Everest. Only a few reach the top and many die while trying. The first men to climb Everest were Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, in 1953. Hillary came from New Zealand and Norgay was a Sherpa from Nepal. Hillary is a very popular man in Nepal because he helps the Sherpa people by raising money to build schools and hospitals. He now has Nepalese nationality.
