Pancake Day
In the Christian calendar Mardi Gras, or Shrove Tuesday, is the last day before Lent. Lent lasts for forty days and during this time, Christians are supposed to eat only very simple food. This means that Shrove Tuesday is the last day for Christian people to be extravagant. It is a day of festivities. There are carnivals and celebrations in many places on Mardi Gras.
In many Western countries it is traditional to eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. In fact many British people refer to it as Pancake Day. In the past, families had a feast on Shrove Tuesday and used up all the food that would not keep for forty days. People used eggs, milky foods, fats, and meat to make pancakes.
In Britain it is also traditional to hold pancake races on Shrove Tuesday. This custom dates back to 1445 when a woman ran to church with her frying pan and wearing an apron. Pancake makers should be able to toss their pancakes into the air so that they turn over, and then catch them again in the pan.
