Summertime is festival time in Europe
There are many festivals in Europe in the summer, mostly in July and August. Summer is a good time for festivals because a lot of people are on holiday, the weather is usually good and evenings are long and light. There are local arts festivals in villages and small towns; there are big music festivals like the Mozart festival in Salzburg, Austria, or the Montreux jazz festival in Switzerland; and there are very big arts festivals like the one in Avignon, France or the International Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The Edinburgh International Festival is very large and attracts artistes from many different countries. The first festival was in 1947 – it was very small but the quality of the productions was excellent. Today the official programme has about 100 of the best international productions in music, dance, theatre and opera. It is very popular and people come from all over the world to see it.
The Fringe is an unofficial festival which is held in Edinburgh at the same time. In different parts of the city there are over a thousand different productions, ranging from rap music to Croatian folk dancing. There are a host of things to see and do at the festival, and it is important to plan your stay carefully if you are to make the most of it.
