Astronomers find new planet

On 15 March 2004 a team of astronomers at Mount Palomar Observatory in California announced an exciting discovery – they had found a new planet. They called this new planet Sedna, the name of the Inuit goddess of the sea.

If research confirms that Sedna really is a planet, it will be the tenth planet in the solar system. It is about the same size as Pluto, but is approximately seventeen billion kilometres from the Sun, so it is three times further from the Sun than Pluto.

Scientists are very excited about this new discovery, because it was completely unexpected. The Americans are now using the Hubble space telescope to observe Sedna. They are able to measure its size and distance more accurately, and have already discovered that Sedna does not have a moon.
