Boxing Day

Boxing Day is a holiday which people in Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Canada celebrate. It is on the 26th December, the day after Christmas Day. Today it is an official holiday. On Boxing Day, it is traditional to give money and other gifts to charities and people in need. It is also usual to give money to service people like the postman.

The holiday probably dates from the Middle Ages but its exact origin is unknown. It probably started when English aristocrats gave their servants Christmas presents in boxes. But it is also possible that it got its name from the fact that priests opened their charity boxes and distributed the contents to the poor on the day after Christmas.
