Santa Claus
In America and many European countries, Santa Claus or Father Christmas is a kind old man who brings presents for children on the night of 24th December.
The legend of Santa Claus goes back to the third century AD. A Christian bishop called Nicholas lived in Myra in Turkey. He was a very kind man and he helped poor people. The Romans persecuted him and he was very brave. The Church made him a saint and he became Saint Nicholas.
Christians celebrated his feast on 6th December because this was the day he died. Today, the Dutch still celebrate Saint Nicholas or Sinter Klaas on the 6th December. But for most people Santa Claus comes at Christmas and is celebrated at the same time as the birth of Christ. Not many people know about the legend of Saint Nicholas today.
