Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day is an important national holiday in the USA. It takes place every year on the fourth Thursday of November. This year it was on 23rd November. Most families in the US celebrate Thanksgiving with a special dinner for family and friends. Children make objects to decorate the house and the dinner table. The meal usually includes roast turkey with cranberries and pumpkin pie for dessert.

The word ‘thanksgiving’ means ‘to give thanks’. Traditionally it was a day when people thanked God for their good fortune and for their food. During the meal, in many American homes it is still traditional for family members to say thank you for things they have received during the past year.

The celebration goes back to the first Europeans who arrived in America. Many were farmers and they brought their traditional harvest thanksgiving festivals with them from Europe.
