The Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is a very famous golf tournament which has existed since 1927. It is a competition between an American team of professional golfers and a European team. The tournament takes place every two years and lasts for three days. Because it is a great honour for a golfer to play in the Ryder Cup, many of the world's best golfers take part in the event. There is no prize money, but the winning team keeps the gold Ryder trophy until the next tournament.

An English amateur golfer called Samuel Ryder started the competition in 1927. He loved the game so much that he gave a 19-inch gold cup to the British Professional Golfers' Association, to be awarded as a trophy. He organised the first tournament with a group of friends who were professional golfers. Because it is a team competition, the rules are quite different from those of a normal golf tournament. Until 1979, the Ryder Cup competitions were held between the United States and Great Britain, but since 1979 a European team has replaced the British team.
