Wimbledon
The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship is probably the most famous tennis tournament in the world. It is also the oldest of the four Grand Slam competitions. The tournament takes place each year in early July. The courts are all grass and this means that the game is very fast. All the best players in the world take part.
The competition started in 1877. In those early days only men played, but the women's singles event was started in 1884. Many of the great tennis legends have won at Wimbledon; they include the American player Pete Sampras. He has won the championship a record seven times in his career. Another famous record holder is Martina Navratilova from the United States. She won the women's singles title nine times in all.
