The Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is a very famous golf competition. It is a professional tournament between a team of Americans and a team of Europeans. The tournament lasts three days and it takes place every two years. Many of the world's best golfers take part in the event. There is no prize money for the winners. They win a gold cup. But it is a great honour for a golfer to play in the Ryder Cup.

The competition started in 1927. An amateur English golfer called Samuel Ryder gave the 19-inch, gold cup to the British Professional Golfers' Association. He and a group of professional golfers made the plans for the tournament. The first Ryder Cup competitions were between the United States and Great Britain. But in 1979 a European team replaced the British team.
