San Fermin Festival

The San Fermin Festival is the most famous bull-running fiesta in Spain. It takes place every year in July and it lasts for a week. Hundreds of thousands of Spaniards and foreign tourists come to the town of Pamplona to see the bulls running through the streets.

Every year people get hurt and this year there were about twenty-one people with injuries. But it’s a long time since there have been any deaths.

The festival has existed since 1591. In those days, its purpose was to move the bulls into the ring which is in the town centre.

The celebrations start with a firework display. Then every morning, six bulls run through the streets. Hundreds of young men dressed in white with red scarves run ahead of the bulls. Every evening, matadors kill the bulls in a ‘corrida’.
