Girls and education
A new report from UNESCO, the United Nations educational organisation, shows that in many developing countries, girls don’t get a good education. Boys receive a better education than girls. Some girls never go to school at all. The situation is especially serious in some African countries. In poor families, girls must stay at home. They work very hard when they are only children. They must help their mothers with the housework. Also, in some countries girls get married very young. In some countries they get married before they are fifteen years old. And they can’t choose their husbands.
In Europe and in some Latin American countries the situation is very different. Girls get better results in secondary school than boys. But boys get better jobs and earn more money than women. There are more men in politics too. So women must always work harder and do better than men to reach the same social position.
