Thanksgiving Day
In the United States, Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday. It is on the fourth Thursday of November every year. This year Thanksgiving was on 23rd November. People don’t go to work on this day. They have a traditional Thanksgiving meal with their family in the evening. They eat roast turkey with cranberries and they have pumpkin pie for dessert.
There are festivals and parades on this day, especially on the east coast of America. In New York City there is a famous Thanksgiving Parade. It starts at nine o’clock and finishes at midday. There are hundreds of very big balloons. People dress up and they decorate the cars and buses.
The Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving, too. But it is on a different day. It is on the second Monday of October. Most Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving with a special dinner for family and friends. Like their American cousins, they usually have roast turkey and pumpkin pie.
