The Easter egg
Easter is a very important Christian celebration in many countries. In Britain, it is traditional to give children chocolate eggs on Easter Sunday. Today the egg is the universal symbol of Easter celebrations around the world. But the egg is not just a Christian symbol. It is the symbol of new life in many cultures. In others, it is the symbol of the universe because of its perfect shape.
Decorating and painting eggs in spring was the custom in England many hundreds of years ago. In ancient Egypt, friends gave each other painted eggs. They were also important to the Romans and Greeks.
Hiding eggs is another common tradition. In many European countries, parents hide chocolate eggs in the garden for their children.
