The Paralympics
The Paralympics are the Olympic Games for disabled people. They take place after the Olympic Games and are very popular today. There are always several thousand sportsmen and sportswomen, from over one hundred and twenty countries, at these Games. Nineteen different sports are played. There are team sports, for example, basketball, volleyball and football, and individual ones like swimming, archery and shooting. Many disabled sportspeople are top class – the Paralympic record for the one hundred metre men's race is 10.72 seconds. The Olympic record is 9.84 seconds.
