Guy Fawkes Day
This is a very popular annual celebration in England which takes place on 5th November. In the 17th century a Catholic man called Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. At this time, Catholics and Protestants were fighting each other. But Guy Fawkes didn’t succeed and soldiers caught and hanged him. This was the origin of the traditional celebration.
During the week before the 5th November, children make a Guy with old clothes and paper. They push their Guy in a wheelbarrow and go from house to house asking for ‘a penny for the Guy.’ On the evening of 5th November, many families build big bonfires in their gardens and they have firework displays. In towns, there are bonfires and firework displays in the parks.
