Putting the clocks back
Clocks all over Europe went back one hour last Sunday. This marks the official end of summer time. It means that there is one extra hour of light in the mornings. But it also means that the evenings are darker. We put the clocks forward again at the end of March.
The inventor of changing the clock was American politician Benjamin Franklin in 1784. He realised that people were wasting daylight hours by staying in bed late in the morning.
Today, many people complain about changing the clock. Some say that it is the cause of road accidents when people leave work in the dark evenings. Other people like the change. They say it is good to wake up in the daylight. There are also many people who don’t care very much. But very few people know why we change the clock.
